Hey there!
You’re reading The Author Files — a newsletter for authors about writing and marketing their books. Every issue brings information, stories, and interviews with people building an author platform. Let’s dive in.
Kindle Unlimited (KU)
This is a subscription service that allows readers to borrow and read as many eligible ebooks as they want for a monthly fee. Instead of purchasing each book individually, subscribers can check out up to 20 books at a time and return them whenever they choose.
For authors, Kindle Unlimited is available through Kindle Direct Publishing by enrolling books in the KDP Select program.
HOW KINDLE UNLIMITED WORKS
When you publish an ebook through Kindle Direct Publishing, you have two choices:
Publish your ebook everywhere (Amazon, Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play, etc.).
Enroll your ebook in KDP Select, making it exclusive to Amazon for renewable 90-day terms.
Books enrolled in KDP Select automatically become available to Kindle Unlimited subscribers.
Readers do not pay extra for your book. Instead, Amazon pays authors from a monthly global royalty pool based primarily on the number of pages subscribers read.
For example:
A reader downloads your 300-page novel.
They read 50 pages.
You are paid for those 50 pages.
If they later finish the book, you receive payment for the remaining pages.
If they never open the book, you receive no Kindle Unlimited royalties.
HOW AUTHORS GET PAID
A typical payout might be around $0.004–$0.005 per page, although it varies from month to month.
Benefits of Kindle Unlimited
1. Increased Discoverability
Amazon heavily promotes Kindle Unlimited books.
KU titles frequently appear in:
Recommended reads
Bestseller lists
"Customers also read"
Personalized recommendations
Because Amazon wants subscribers to continue using the service, it has an incentive to recommend KU books.
2. More Readers Will Try Unknown Authors
Many readers hesitate to spend money on an unfamiliar author.
With Kindle Unlimited, trying your book feels free because it is included in the subscriber's membership. This dramatically lowers the barrier to entry.
Many indie authors built their careers because KU readers were willing to take a chance on them.
3. Income from Binge Readers
Series perform especially well in Kindle Unlimited.
Imagine you have 4 books in a series. A reader finishes Book 1 and immediately borrows Book 2. Then Book 3. Then Book 4.
Instead of earning one sale, you may earn page-read royalties across your entire series.
Many successful authors earn the majority of their income from readers who binge-read multiple books.
4. Better Performance for Long Books
Unlike regular ebook sales, Kindle Unlimited rewards longer books because payment is tied to pages read rather than a fixed purchase price.
A well-written 500-page novel may generate substantially more income than a 200-page novel if readers finish it.
That does not mean authors should pad their books. Readers who abandon a slow or bloated novel reduce your overall page reads. Strong pacing and satisfying storytelling remain essential.
5. Promotional Opportunities
KDP Select includes promotional tools such as:
Kindle Countdown Deals (in eligible marketplaces)
Free Book Promotions
These can help boost visibility, attract new readers, and increase reviews.
6. Consistent Monthly Income
Many authors appreciate Kindle Unlimited because it can provide recurring monthly revenue.
Instead of relying solely on new releases, older books in a series can continue generating page-read income for years.
POTENTIAL DRAWBACKS
Kindle Unlimited is not the best choice for every author.
The biggest tradeoff is exclusivity.
While enrolled in KDP Select, the ebook version cannot be sold or distributed through other retailers.
Print books and audiobooks may still be distributed elsewhere, but the enrolled ebook must remain exclusive to Amazon.
UNPREDICTABLE ROYALTY RATES
Amazon determines the monthly per-page payout. Authors cannot control this rate, and it can fluctuate over time.
NOTE EVERY GENRE PERFORMS EQUALLY
Kindle Unlimited tends to perform especially well for genres with avid, high-volume readers, such as:
Romance
Fantasy
Science fiction
Mystery and thriller
LitRPG
Paranormal romance
Cozy mystery
Genres that often rely more on direct purchases than subscription reading include:
Nonfiction
Business
Academic books
Highly illustrated books
Reference works
Children's picture books
That doesn't mean these categories cannot succeed in KU, but subscription reading habits vary by audience.
IS KINDLE UNLIMITED RIGHT FOR YOU?
Kindle Unlimited is often a strong fit if you:
Write fiction, especially in popular genres.
Have a series or plan to write one.
Publish consistently.
Want to reach readers who consume many books each month.
Are comfortable making your ebook exclusive to Amazon during each 90-day enrollment period.
You may prefer publishing "wide" (selling through multiple retailers) if you:
Already have readers across several ebook stores.
Want to build audiences outside Amazon.
Write books that sell better through direct purchases than through subscription reading.
Do not want to commit to Amazon exclusivity.
A BALANCED STRATEGY
Many successful independent authors begin with Kindle Unlimited to build an audience, especially if they are launching a new fiction series. The combination of Amazon's recommendation engine, subscriber visibility, and page-read royalties can accelerate discoverability when an author is relatively unknown.
Others choose a wide publishing strategy to diversify income and reach readers on multiple platforms.
Neither approach is universally better. The best choice depends on your genre, publishing goals, release schedule, and willingness to trade broader distribution for the added visibility and earning potential that Kindle Unlimited can provide.
Happy Writing!
